i am having troubles choosing my anti virus software, and would appreciate some advice.
What if anything have you heard about Kaspersky 7.0?
What anti virus would you suggest if not Kaspersky?
Are the free anti virus programs beneficial or a waste of time?
Oh yeah.. It needs to be compatible with Windows Vista Sp1 32-bit
thanks you all in advance:@)

While I haven't heard bad things about Kaspersky, I really haven't heard good things about it. I would recommend using Avast Anti-virus. The home edition is free, all you need to do is re register for a key every 14 months. I have been using it for years now and haven't gone back to any of my previous AV programs (McAfee, Norton, AVG). I run it on a vista machine with no problems. It also is not resource heavy like some AV's can be. Hope that helped.

Kaspersky 2009 8.0.506 is the latest version not 7.0.

I use Kaspersky with no issues and it's compatible with most Windows versions. I would suggest you create a free account with Kaspersky Forum if you have any issues.
