Kaspersky is the best antivirus in the world. Hence you can trust that you have purchased the right software.

'System Volume Information' is your old System Restore points. It is traces of previous infections that have already been removed. They can do absolutely no harm in System Restore unless you were to use System Restore and restored your computer back to a point in time that is infected. At which point your KIS would have, presumably, detected it again.
The only sure way to remove System Volume Information malware traces is to manually delete all your old System Restore points. To do so (XP):
go to control panel > system > system restore > check mark "Turn off system restore on all drives" > apply > answer "yes" > OK > reboot. Then turn System Restore back on again.

And please be aware that NO anti-virus can ever be relied upon to give 100% protection. None of them do, free or paid. Most only detect about 85 to 95% of all KNOWN viruses. When a brand new virus is released, NO signature-based anti-virus will detect it for several hours up to several days. And over 1200 new variants of viruses and other malware are created by the "black-hats" each and every day.
Kaspersky issues updates to detect these new malwares, 12 to 15 times a day. Avast usually once. And don't forget that KIS is a complete security suite, Avast is an anti-virus. I would rate Avast a very good program, especially considering the price. I would rate Kaspersky, World Class.
You should actually consider an anti-virus program to be your "last line of defense". Safe internet surfing and downloading practices along with maintaining your Windows and all your installed software with all critical updates and security patches should be your frontline defense.
Good luck.
