I accidentally clicked an ad and I think I got a virus, so I got Mcafee cause I have heard it is really good. But is the free version safe to download?

Mcafee is a decent Anti-Virus software, however this only applies to the paid product. The free edition is very poor. I recommend you getting Avast’s free home edition;

I actually run this on all my home PC’s, it has features that even many paid products lack;
Anti-spyware built-in
Web Shield
Anti-rootkit built-in
Automatic updates
Strong self-protection
Virus Chest
Antivirus kernel
System integration
Simple User Interface
Integrated Virus Cleaner
Resident protection
Support for 64-bit Windows
P2P and IM Shields
Internationalization
Network Shield

Go with AVGFree, they give you free updates, programs like McAfee make you pay and are worthless when you don’t update it. Just google AVG and get the free version

Your question has already been answered but I would recommend downloading McAfee Siteadvisor. It will help show you unsafe websites before any mistakes are made.
Don’t rely on it completely though because it often will get it’s ratings mixed up. I’m sure that only happens when there bribed though.

McAfee is safe and very good AntVirus protection.
I have over the years used a lot of the major security software, McAfee, Trend Micro, Symantic/Norton and am now using ESET NOD32. They are all good. I have been using the internet for over twenty years and have never picked up a virus.
I would suggest you research AntiVirus software and pay the money for the one you like best.
