HP Pavilion Elite PC, Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600@ 2.40GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT, 32-bit Operating System and is Windows Vista Home Premium.
I don't mean the computer is slow what I meant was is the speed of my computer (2.40GHz) slow for my computer because I have good specs and slow speed because some of the people I know don't have any of my specs but have almost 3.00GHz is mine still better than theirs? and in this case does the speed really matter?

YOU HAVE 4 times 2.4o GHz-NOT JUST 1 time 3.0GHz.

I have the same CPU. This CPU is in no way slow! I would say that it is more than fast enough to play today's current games if you pair it with a good graphics card. Today's games are more reliant on the graphics processor than on the CPU. So, I would recommend upgrading your graphics card to something a little better such as the GeForce 9800.

what's killing the speed of your computer is the 2 gigs of ram, vista uses 1 gb when it has nothing running, upgrading to 3 gbs, the max a 32 bit operating system can support, would greatly enhance the speed of your gaming, almost twice as fast, your cpu is fine and your graphics card is decent, you may want to upgrade that eventually but you definatelyneed more ram, check out crucial.com for good deals and high quality ram

Everything sounds ok to me. You should be able to run pretty much whatever you want to.

For todays gaming its better to have a fast(3.0+GHz) dual core CPU rather than a slower(2.4GHz) quad core CPU as games are not designed to use 4 cores yet. In the future they will but not now.
You should be running at least 2gb of RAM if running XP & 4gb of RAM for Vista.
You need a modern high end video card to run todays modern games. Nvidias 8800gt/gtx or ATIs HD 2900xt will do the trick.
My systyems 2 years old & I am running an Intel 2.8GHz dual core CPU, 2gb DDR2 PC4200 RAM & an ATI x1800xt video card on Windows XP & can play any game I want at decent FPS.
