To speed up your computer and free up space and memory for free, though you might want to look at upgrading RAM and the Hard Drive:

Go to the Start Menu> Run
      Type in "appwiz.cpl"
      Uninstall whatever you don't need.

Next, go to Start Menu> Run again and type in "msconfig".
Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck everything you don't want to startup. If you want, you can uncheck everything, and your anti-virus will still restart itself when you log on.

Now go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Documents and Settings> [USER NAME]> Local Settings> and delete everything inside the Temp Folder. (This is a hidden folder so you will needto have "show hidden files and folders" checked in Folder Options) All the files in this folder are just temporary files that your Internet stored that for certain websites.

Then go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Windows> Prefetch and delete everything inside it. This folder is like an cache for programs and should be emptied about once a month.

You could also try installing CCleaner, it will get rid of alot of temporary files on your computer. It also has a registry repair system, which is easily the best free one available on the Internet:
      http://www.ccleaner.com/download

Another option is to try defragmenting your computer.
Go to the Start Menu and go to All Programs
Go to Accessories and System Tools.
Choose Disk Defragmenter and when it loads click defragment.

Next, go to Device Manger (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and update all drivers.

Another thing I would say is to compress your files if you already haven't.
Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive
Check the Compress Drive button and let it do it's thing.

Finally, make sure your Hard Drive doesn't have any bad sectors. Go to My Computer> Right Click Hard Drive> Properties> Tools Tab> Check Now> Check both boxes and Start. It will ask you to reboot, so reboot. This will clear out any bad sectors on your Hard Drive.

These are short-term solutions however. the easiest way is to just upgrade the RAM on your system, but at least the ways above are free.

A very good, free AV available to download is AVG 8 Anti-virus:
      http://www.free.grisoft.com

And for any spyware problems, get SpyBot - Search and Destroy:
      http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

Both are free, as powerful as paid programs, like Norton and McAfee, and don't use up as many resources.

Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

      Good Luck.

Not having much memory (RAM) won't make it shut off.

I don't think the problem is that it's not well equipped; It sounds like something is not working the way it should.

What kind of noise is it? Maybe there's a problem with the hard drive. Also, does if feel very warm when that happens? Maybe your processor is overheating?

download a program called SIW, which tells you everything about your computer…how much memory you have, what speed it is, how many slots are available, how much it can use, etc.

      This will help later.

The C drive is the physical disk drive on your computer. you're fine in what you show, as you have 2/3rds of your hard drive left.you are running low on RAM (usable physical memory) and should probably upgrade/buy more.

Virtual memory is actually a section of the hard drive (C drive) that the PC writes to when it runs out of RAM (where applications actually run). As you're seeing, virtual memory is ALOT slower than ram.

      run the SIW program
      http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html
On it you'll see 3 sections, software/hardware and network. In the hardware area is a section called memory.
that will show you how many slots you have available (where the memory is actually plugged in), as well as the maximum amount you can have. so if you have a max of 4069 MBytes, and 2 memory slots, you can get 2 memory sticks with 2048 each (2 gigs each) for a total of 4 gigs (4096)

you should also see what's currently in the 2 slots, speed and data width are the 2 important things there, so you can search for two 2 gig memory sticks, with that speed and data width, buy them online and install them.

It's ALOT easier than it sounds :)

Your computer isn't slow because of memory. Or at least there is more than just this that contributes.

Drive C: total size 37.26GB:Size of your hard drive in GigaBites
      Free space: 26.42GB
      Used space: 10.84GB

USABLE PHYSICAL MEMORY 480 MEMORY :RAM
AVAILABLE PHSICAL MEMORY 178MB :RAM not being used
MEMORY LOAD 62% :% being used
AVAILABLE VIRUTAL MEMORY 1122MB :Amount of memory that your hard drive is using as "Fake" RAM
TOTAL VIRTUAL MEMORY 808 MB :Again, not being used.

RAM is Random Access Memory. If you open your computer RAM is the sticks about the size of a candy bar, but much thinner, sticking up from your motherboard (the piece everything is plugged into). It is used as the muscle of your computer, you could say. The more you have the better, but htere is no need to go nuts. 1GB is pretty good, so you could probably use some more.

If you want to make your computer faster, you can always buy more. Just pop one out (Really not hard, anyone can do it and it requires no special skills) and take it into a comp shop and tell them you want some more of the same type.

However, the speed of your computer depends on many things other than this, like the speed of your processor, how many programs you are running at once, how many services (like google toolbar) you have going. Even which operating system you are using. Win XP uses much less processing power than Vista. All of these contribute, and without knowing this stuff, there is really no way that I or anyone else can really help you out.

You can try defragging your computer. This can be accessed through the control panel. In classic view, go to administrative tools and then computer management. You will see Disk Defragmenter. Click on it and choose Defrag hard drive. This will probably take a while to do. 1-4 hours depending on how long it's been since the last time this was done. There is no way to screw up your computer by doing this and it should probably get done every couple of months. Don't mess around with the other tools in computer management though, they can really mess you up if you don't know what you are doing.

The 2660Mhz speed is pretty good though, you can probably get a few more years out of your computer with a few upgrades.

      Hope this helps you.

Btw, don't use all capitals. It's hard to read and equivelant to shouting.

How old is it? Is it used? Has anything else been replaced?

If it's more than about 7 years old it'll seem slow by today's standards. 2.6Ghz (2660Mhz) shouldn't be that slow but slow is a relative term.

Go to the local office/computer store (CircuitCity, BestBuy, etc) with the make, model, etc. and they can help you find the right kind of memory.
For Windows XP you should have at least 512MB or however much it can hold (assuming you can afford it) up to about 1GB for email and normal school-work type use.

Also, you may want to consider a new hard-drive. I got a free computer the neighbor was throwing in the trash — he said it was too slow. I ran a bunch of tests and found out it just needed a new hard drive. Ran like new after that…if you have any friends who are in computer repair they can probably check to see how fast the hard drive is running and if it's failing or not. Or if you can afford it, just get a new one and write it off as an upgrade for more space.
