Yes - I have seen this happen before. Norton is rubbish. It is the worst anti-virus product currently on the market. At one time it used to be good - before Symantec took over. Norton acts more like a virus and entrenches itself deep into your system. The software will do more harm to your PC than good and when you to to remove it, it leaves behind over 375 traces in your registry files/folders and subsystem. You have to download their removal tool just to get it off of your system. You are much better off with a free anti-virus product.
NOD32 and Kaspersky are the best anti-virus applications and much better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee (recent tests at av-comparatives.org). If you want a free anti-virus, AVG, Avast! or AntiVir all are better than Norton (install only 1).

I would rather have a virus on my computer than having Norton, at least I know what I am dealing with.

If you are running XP SP2 or SP3 with Norton AV (NAV) and running less than an effective 512mb (meaning after the video card shares your memory if you only have integrated graphics) then yes. More than likely it lies more in that you don't have enough RAM anymore or you have spyware/viruses that norton cannot detect, what version of Norton 2008, 2009 or older? Running something more effective such as Bitdefender, Kaspersky Internet Security, Eset's Nod32, Malwarebytes Pro or one of the other many highly rated Antivirus that aren't Norton, Trend Micro, Mcafee or the worst CA Antivirus (it is free for a reason, I know CA employees that won't touch the stuff)!!
