Is Panda Antivirus worth the try?

July 19th, 2008 · 7 Comments

I need a powerful antivirus program that is focused on its efficiency, not on its appearance. For example, in the past, for a complete year, I had used only a command-line antivirus because I knew that it was better than an antivirus with a GUI.

Now, my Avira AntiVir PE Premium license is going to expire in a few days.

I have been a Panda customer in the past, and I admit that I was disappointed by its "wannabe Norton Antivirus" GUI — colorful balloons appearing every five minutes to tell me how unprotected I was, etc. And the uninstallation was a painful process.

But now, the software has changed its named; the company has changed its website. They look like they what to be taken seriously from now on.

I wondered if the software is now more efficient and less Norton-like.

I'd like to hear comments from current customers or people who had at least tried the free evaluation version.

If you want to pay for a Anti Virus I would go for Kaspersky, Kaspersky is probably one of the best Security Suite's out there, Kaspersky also employs Ex-Hacker's to try and hack into computer's with Kaspersky on them, they then find and fix the problem, hence the regular up date's.

You can download Kaspersky's 30 day trail from http://www.Kaspersky.com or you can buy the full version.

Check this http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2008_02.php , as you can see it's not even mentioned. I use Avast Home free. If you want a paid version go for NOD32 or Kasperski.

All in all, a larger company that has a paid for product is going to develop a signature the fastest when compared to other smaller companies.

I would look at TrendMicro and Kaspersky before others ones.

If you can handle a non GUI based AV, then you have some computer background, and should be able to take ANY antivirus out there and configure it so you get less pop ups. However, even if you dont get popups, you STILL want it to LOG those events.

Real Time protection (what you really need) is taxing on a computer. However, in today's systems, the processing power and memory MORE than cover the importance.

No anti-virus has, is or will ever be as good as NOD32. Go with it and stick with it. I kid you not.

I prefer ESET Smart Secirity for it's performance and low memory usage
I haven't tried Panda, but taking a look at Antivirus ratings, Eset Smart Secirity at least appears in top 10

The best you can get is

      Avira AntiVir PE Premium

      It detects 99.6% of viruses!
