There are a few freeby ones (google for them) which tend to be jsut as effective as the others which love to hye things up.

if you PC is slow, try using SEVERAL programs to check for spyware/adware. Windows defender, adaware from lavasoft, AVG (Grisfot) now do one and so does spybot. All free

Nothing to do with registry but more likely to be your problem tha a messy registry.

Oh and defrag your drive if you haven’t done so for a while. (START > All programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk defrag)

Been there done that. Instead, to speed up your Windows programs, I found that if you go to START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, then SYSTEM INFORMATION (on 98, not sure of process to get there on XP). The % (percent) of resources in use will show. The closer you can get to the 90’s the better.

Then click on TOOLS, SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY, and STARTUP. All the items that are checked load when the system starts and even before you can click on anything on your computer. Look at them, do you see stuff loading that you only use once in a great while (like Yahoo Pager)? UNCLICK those items. Do NOT unclick anything you don’t know (such as ScanRegistery). This can and does help a lot.

The more stuff that loads in memory the slower your system will be. You will be surprised at what some software you have used puts in your registry to load WITHOUT your permission. Even some web sites you land on by accident will put stuff in your registry.

Remember to reboot EVERY time you do the registry thing. And some programs that have put them-self in your register to start on boot, will just not go away and then you have to go in and change the actual name that loads (usually an .EXE) so that the registry can’t find it when it goes to load.

I do this at least once a week. Makes a big difference.
