spybot sd, now at version 1.6, got terrible reviews from pc magazine, a publication i trust, as did spyware terminator 2.0. i dont know of any other free programs aside from windows defender, also terrible, that provide realtime protection.

spybot is good. also superantispyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com ) is good and has realtime protection.

You are correct about the lack of free real-time antispyware programs which actually perform well. That's where the AV companies make their money these days, so paying is about the only way I know of to get the real-time protections. AVG has a very good anti-virus program which includes the real-time protections, but you must pay about $40.00 per year to subscribe. Worth every penny, if you ask me — it has worked just fine on my laptop, caught a lot of stuff Norton missed, and is lightweight on system resources.
AVG Free does not have real-time protections, and does not scan for rootkits, among other things. The free edition of Super Antispyware, which I also use, has NO real-time protections. They make you pay for real-time protections, just like everyone else. Spybot Search and Destroy, Version 5.6 was the version which got terrible review notes at PC Magazine. Spyware Terminator has also gotten very poor reviews.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
