I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject, but I am pretty sure that I've heard of some free antivirus programs that are as good or better than McAfee and Norton. Any ideas, techies?

Yes, there are several of them freely available in the internet. I used this
http://www.free-av.com/ . It looks cheap but don't be fool by it, it really got a great virus scanner and it is very low on system resource so your computer won't be slow. I was using Norton 2008 that came with my new computer for 15 months. I took it off and I use that one.
There are other free one too but in my option and other computer magazine option, they don't stand up to Avira.

Use http://www.free-av.com/ is the best for free one.

Avast.
Also consider SpyBot and install Tea Timer with it. Tea Timer monitors entries written to the registry and will alert you when something tries to update it.
I've used these 2 in combination on 3 machines at home for 3 years and had zero problems.
Also - MalwareBytes is excellent if you've been hit.
I'll never pay for McAfee or Norton ( hogs ) again.
