I have created a DVD full of .divx files and separated them into different folders with each folder containing a thumbs.db file. I then burned all these folders to a DVD. Maybe I dont understand what thumbs.db files are. I thought the file was an actual collection of "snapshots" from each file in a folder that was created so that, instead of having to "re-create" snapshots of each .divx file, Windows XP could simply load the thumbs.db file for the directory and instantly show the thumbnails of the movie files in the folder, saving valuable time. But when I browse to a folder which contains a thumbs.db file in it, I can't honestly say I see any real speed or performance improvement. In fact, it seems like it is simply reading all the thumbs from scratch. So what is the point of a thumbs.db file? Is it even worth having? Is Windows XP even loading the file? Does it even see the thumbs.db?

You can do a simple experiment to find out. Backup your movie, delete the thumbs files and the try it again. If there's no difference then the thumbs files are useless.
