Got a problem, here. Knowledgeable Apple users only, please..I’m looking for REAL advice… I just bought a full retail version of Mac OS 9.0.4, and have a Summer 2001 iMac G3. For some reason, it will not install. The question is not about the other specs of my computer, because they all check out. I read somewhere that you cannot install a version of Mac OS below the level that your computer was originally shipped with. Is that the case with me? Is there a workaround? Thanks in advance.

It has been years since I have worked with MacOs 9 that old. I have installed MacOs 9.2 on many iMac G3’s with no problem. You can install an older version of 9 on a Mac. It’s installing 8 or 7 that you can’t do. Insert the CD & hold down the “C” key on a restart. If the iMac starts up from the MacOs 9.04 CD, then it should install. If it doesn’t start up, then you have a bad CD. If iy does start up, you could always erase the hard drive and do an install that way.

You have stated it correctly. By summer 2001, Apple was at OS 9.2.1 so you can't install anything before that.
There is no reasonable workaround. You want everything to work correctly so you need 9.2.1 or later.
