takes up space
"you should install over it" doesnt make sense. can i uninstall it? or are the old updates required? it takes up space, i dont want needless things taking up space.
ok, good answers. now once java 7 is available, i can uninstall 6 and all the updates for 6 right?
wow. great information willy, thanks. users really dont know they should uninstall old versions (and the updates) when new ones are available but NOT the updates within the current version! why doesn't java do this automatically?

Indeed, Java doesn't install 'over the top' of the old version, it just adds the latest version to the list. Yes, you *should* uninstall the old versions. Most of the Java updates are for security reasons and if you leave old versions on your hard drive it could be a security risk. Removing them also frees up a whole load of space.
Edit: The *only* version of Java you should have is the latest (currently 6.10). *Everything* prior to this *should* be removed, i.e. 1-9. See this expert advice in an old post at Spyware Warrior: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?p=139765#139765
