Okay here it goes.
I had a virus or spyware called Antivirus 2008 XP. I have had this annoying spyware two times, both times they were different versions of it. I succesfully removed Antivirus 2008 Pro the first time with SmitFraudFix. Now I have Antivirus 2008 XP. Here is the main problem.
When I insert my Windows XP CD and restart my computer I will see a message saying to boot from the CD press any key now. It will give me about 10 seconds or so until it proceeds with the normal start up. I press all the keys I can in that amount of time, but nothing happens. It does not register that I am pressing anything! The numb lock light is on and it appears that it is on and working, but it doesn’t. Now here is the strange thing.
The first time I had this (Antivirus 2008 Pro) I had the same problem before I successfully removed it. Before I used SmitFraud and removed it completely from my system I could not use the keyboard during start up to access my XP cd. The first time after I completely removed AV2008PRO I could use my keyboard and access the boot disk for XP. (I really wish I would have just reinstalled then!) Now even though I think I have completely removed the new Antivirus 2008 XP I still can’t use the keyboard during startup and access the CD.
Is there a chance that I don’t have it completely gone from my system? BTW this new strand or Antivirus 2008 XP doesn’t seem to be eliminated with SmitFraud like the first one. I had to actually manually find the files and remove them as well as registry etc…
I guess my main question is what can I do? I have tried using a USB keyboard as well as the stock PS2 connection board. Both don’t work. The USB keyboard won’t even light up until your inside Windows XP! Is it possible that a spyware program like this could prevent my computer from having the keyboard functional to prevent me from reinstalling an OS to get rid of it? If that is truely the case than god damn! Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you!
James

Try going into your BIOS setup, make sure that “USB Legacy” support is enabled.

Hi James,
First of all, Smithfraudfix can not remove Antivirus 2008 0r 2009.
You need to use malwarbites to remove this program. You can download it from the following
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/uninstall-antivirus-2009
I am sure it would definetely help you.

Yeah you must enable USB in your BIOS
or, just the p/2 adapters(I believe thats what they are called.)

Try a different keyboard
Search the computer for “xpa.exe”
There are variations but xpa.exe is the main one.
Delete the files and folders

Hi James,
Any success yet? If not, maybe a guide to help you do a thorough clean will help:

There are other threads here about dealing with specific viruses:

If you don’t get anywhere with those, you could sign up and get personalised help; the malware guys are really good. But before posting for help, run right through the guide because by the time you get through that, there’s less for them to deal with, and read the two stickies about not bumping and the HJT Tutorial - they give you info about how to make things easier for everyone.
All the best.
