Mac book pro and pc experts, networking question!?

July 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Ok, So I have a mac book pro, yay! But there is 1 problem i don't know how to use wifi (airport)!!
I would like to use the airport on the mac for connecting the internet VIA my windows xp pc which already has a Wifi pci card and also has a valid internet connection VIA ethernet internet connection. Now this internet connection is a PPPoE which requires a user name and password. From the Local area connection setting an IP address with netmask, no gateway ip and 2 DNS servers (preffered and alternate). This internet connection is only active when i enter the user name and password, through the PPPoE connection in windows.

So, this is the scenario, my main question is:
How can I get mac book pro on internet via the airport wifi connection to share the internet connection from my pc.
Please give step-by-step instruction on what the ip setting on the mac should be like, etc.
I HOPE ITS POSSIBLE!! THANKS
PS im not using a wan modem, the ethernet cable is straight coming from my apartment terrace and connecting to my pc ethernet port. So i can't use a wireless modem with an WAN port. You can think my desktop pc as being the wireless modem, which already has PCI wireless (wifi) card.
Thanks

You can think my desktop pc as being the wireless router, which already has PCI wireless (wifi) card and enabled internet connection.
Thanks

The easy way is to purchase a wireless router. When you set up the router,
Plug the modem into the WAN port of the router and your windows computer into one of the LAN ports.
Use the manual to see how to access and set up your router using your browser.
Enter the default user name and password and enter the router setup pages.
In Basic setup select PPoE as the type of service you have and enter the information that you already have in your Windows machine. Make sure that you select "clone MAC ID".
By doing this the router looks just like your computer as far as the ISP is concerned. You should now be able to access the Internet.
Next, still using the plugged in computer, follow the instructions in the manual for setting up wireless. Make sure you secure your connection using WPA encryption, WEP has been hacked
When you enter your network key - Write it down for storage in a safe place
Change the SSID (router name) so it's easy to identify
Finally change the user name and password to the router. Please Write them down !!! The hackers know all the defaults
Make sure you have saved all your changes, restart your router and connect with the Macbook wirelessly
      Your good to go

What John said - get a router. It will be much easier and you won't need the PC turned for the Mac to access the Internet.
