Mac vs Windows?

June 19th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I am not trying to be a smartazz or anything but just get insight from others.
I have used Mac and now using Vista Home Premium. I do find Mac is a little easier for creating graphics but Windows Vista will do the same thing but just a few more steps. But all in all I find a laptop with Vista Home premium to be superior to a Mac. The Vista laptop is much cheaper than a mac. Windows has far more software and hardware support. Mac is very limited in upgrades and upgrades are expensive where for the pc upgrades are easy and cheap. I find with Vista premium there are a lot of neat features and upgrades if you will just take the time to learn about the os. I also find the Mac commercials to be extremely misleading. They make Windows look like it will crash daily. I have had my Vista laptop for a year now and never have had a problem. With Vista I can easily do everything Mac advertises with pics, music, video, document editing, internet surfind, and more. I believe Macs popularity has to
with that it looks more stylish and also the false advertising with the commercials. But another thing that comes to mind is that if Mac is so great and so much better than Windows then why is it that a majority of Mac users go out and purchase Windows to load to their system? I just dont see the point in paying for an already overly priced computer with limited capabilities and then going out and buying a copy of Windows which in my opinion is overpriced as well.

Also a lot of people say Mac just works. Well my laptop with Windows also just works.
Dont get me wrong here though. I am not trashing Mac as it does work and it works well. I am just trying to understand from others about how it is supposidly so superior to Windows as a lot of Mac users claim.
Again not trying to be a smartazz but from talking to a lot of people in person I get the same response about how it is easier to use.

I believe for the most part the people who buy Mac are the ones who dont not care to take the time to learn about there OS. A lot of people dont know what they are missing out on when they get a Mac.
About spyware and viruses. It is true that Macs really do not get spyware or viruses but that is because not many people have them. If it were reversed and 90% of the worlds computers were Mac you would hardly see any viruses or spyware for Windows. But over time you will see viruses and spyware coming up for Mac.

Windows for the business minded people and Mac for the simple, creative people.

Macs don't crash as much and are a bit faster.

Vista still has many glitches and is a bit slow for my taste.
I have both Vista and Mac.

Yes, PC has more programs available but to me, Mac is easier to use.

It's a matter of preference really.

I really don't like Vista at all.

A lot of criticism Windows gets is from the need of maintaining it. Ask Windows users if they use anti-virus or anti-spyware, and they'll say "yes."

I know that Windows doesn't crash daily. I'm using a Windows machine right now at work and I'm fine with that. I personally own a Mac at home and I'm happy with it. I just felt like I shouldn't have to maintain a computer with anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Why should I have to use any of that? Let me just buy a computer that doesn't need that stuff. Using a computer should be just that: using it. I shouldn't have to maintain it at all.

Vista has had many issues reported about it but it depends on what you use it for. That's what it really boils down to.

What do you want the computer to do? What's the reason for owning the machine?

It varies for everyone. I got my Mac computer after building my own Windows machines for years. I'm happier about it indeed. I don't have to worry about anything. Can I play games? Not many (Starcraft for the win). Can I type documents? Yes. Can I surf the web? Yes. Ok I'm happy.

Yes Macs are more expensive but you buy the name with the style. Think Nike shoes. Shoes are functional regardless of brand. Buying Nike over Avia is the same thing as Mac over Windows. Style and name.

People are buying Macs and loading Windows because they can have a stylish looking computer with the productivity of Windows. The president of my alma mater bought a Macbook Pro and put Windows on it. Mac style, business productivity.

It's all a matter of preference. And heck we haven't even covered Linux at all. It's free and you can build a computer that runs it for $250. But that's for another time.

Just remember a new laptop comes with FREE vista but if yu have to buy an upgrade its going to hurt between £200 and £400.

while the mac only costs £70. also only high spec equipment works with Vista,

comparing an intel mac of today with the PPC imacs of yesteryear will lead to some very big surprises. they are FAST! very fast.

you are very lucky to not have Vista crash as mine manages 4 hours between crashes or 4 minutes if I am trying Video editing with filters. The ease of video editing on Vista with After Effects is pathetic!

That said in past when using a old PPC iMac it was similar but the new Intel/OS X (unix based) system has never stalled or crashed and the applications do work as a suite.

The main falldown on a Mac is it is not supported by many games producers but as I believe a PS3 or Wii gives a better gaming experience than Vista any day its not an issue for me.

It should be down to personal choice and what the user finds easiest to use not peer pressure or the Windows vs Mac cam or is that hate camapign.

Remember Microsoft has a high %'age of share in Apple so they cant think its that bad or are they hedging their bets.

      Much cheaper?
On average Windows computers run 10 to 15 % less than a Mac. Add in the cost of anti-virus software, the hassle of daily scans and virus updates, and it's not worth it. There are no released MacOS X viruses, there are over 118,000 Windows viruses. Who cares why? I wanted safe, reliable computers, that's why I have 3 Macs. If you check the Yahoo answers section on daily basis people are asking how to switch back to XP, they hate Vista. You don't see any MacOS X users asking to switch back to OS 9. As to a majority of Mac users putting windows on their Macs, I don't have Windows, I know at least a dozen Mac users, none have Windows on their Macs. Apple has 67% of the market share for computers in the USA that cost over $1000, they must be doing something right.
