I got a call from the bridal rep saying that if I have a Macy's credit card, I can earn a 5% gift card for Macy's based upon what my guests buy from my registry.
It costs me nothing, but if I get $1,000 in gifts bought by my guests from my registry, Macy's will send me a $50 gift card one month after my wedding.
Anyone else heard of this? Signed up for it? Good/Bad experiences?
They said we don't have to use the card, just have it. But that by having the card, that is how they ensure you get the rebate.
I'm *sure* its a great temptation to use the card, but I'm psycho about NOT using my cards.
I already have a Macy's card that is paid off (and has been for some time) so its presence is already on my credit report.

I never heard that but if you can confirm that correct from thier coprorate office or another store thats great… but only if you have good credit and you will use the card. The more accounts you have open reflect on your credit score and standing. So weight the options.

Basically you are signing up for a credit card, their hook is to give you a gift card to their store. Realize that every card you have with an available credit limit affects your overall credit score. Having a credit card for emergency situations is OK, but don't sign up for every store credit card or everyone that comes in the mail. It will actually 'cost' you if you go out to get a car or a mortgage. If you do get the credit card for the freebie, cancel it about a month down the road.

I am also registered at Macys and they offered this to me as well. We didn't sign up for it becuase we didn't want to have another credit card in our wallets. I believe in just having 1 credit each and managing it - too many gets too complicated and overwhelming. Also, whatever you buy and put on your card up until 60 days after your wedding date, you earn 10% cash back.
I say get it if thats the only place you are registered. See, we only put our most expensive items on it such as our wedding dishes and cookware. Our linens and other things are at Kohls.

Yep, I got it. I got 10% of my guests' purchases, 5% on purchases I made myself. And in the end, I got a gift card for $250 to be used until just under a year after my wedding.
I ended up using the card for a business suit I needed. It's kind of tricky because despite what they said I can't pay it in the store OR on their website. It's really wierd, but mailing a payment isn't that big a deal to me… Just wish they had better represented themselves! (And I couldn't use the "points" they gave me towards my purchase either, but I expected that - it wasn't a "housewares" purchase!)

I used to manage a Macy's China department.
Yes, this is true. There are other benefits as well. You will get a 10% discount day to buy what was not purchased off the bridal registry list after the wedding. A great way to spent all the gift cards you will receive.
Macy's will send invitations for bridal showers, compile a list of all presents (makes thank-you-notes much easier).
The bridal department will help you with exchanges of duplicates, a list will help you pick what you want to put on the registry.
Congratulations to the future bride!

I've heard about it, but we didn't do it for our registry. You will get a Macy's credit card and they are hoping that you will charge your registry completion and make like $200 on you. If you don't charge anything, I don't think it will hurt you anymore than any instant credit card would.

Yes this is awesome. It is true and it works out great. The deal was when I got married in aug 07, you got credit everytime you used your macys card and everytime somone made a purchase off your registery you got credit. Then six months after your wedding you get a macys gift card. Do this its called star rewards.

I have heard of this… but not that you had to have a macy's credit card. Only that if you register with them you get the 5%.

Yes it's true. I was a "I'll believe it when I see it" sort of person. They sent me monthly statements of what i was "earning"..and in the end I got a gift card for several hundred dollars, and also a registry completion discount. In other words, whatever was left on the registry, I got a discount if I chose to complete it myself. Good deal. FYI..it did take a bit of time for me to get my gift card..something like 2 months after the wedding, but the important part was I got it!

Well, as someone pointed out, you may want to call the corporate office just to verify if this is true.
But, if it was me…..I would say GREAT!!! Obviously, what they are wanting you to do is to come in with your $50 gift card and perhaps (they are hoping!), that you will really want to buy something for $100 instead.
If it was me, I would buy something for $49.99 and pay the sales tax. Hey…..it's free money….take advantage of it! Just make sure that it's legit….but, yes, I have heard that the bigger department stores do this. Again, obviously wanting you to spend more. I've worked in retailing (previously) and know all the tricks.
Good luck and use your free gift card wisely!
