Mcafee on access scan keeps detecting virus but does not alert me?

I recently just installed Mcafee from my school website. I am pretty sure I installed it right but I feel like the program is not working correctly. Every time I check the on access scan it says it detected ___ # of virus… and it just continue to keep scanning for hours without do anything to the viruses. I don't even get an alert when a virus is detected ( in the check box in the properties I did check off "alert me when virus is detected). Also the first time I installed Mcafee the on access scan detected 18 viruses while the on demand scan detected none. So I left my computer on all night to continue checking, however when I woke up the program had restarted my computer and all the viruses were gone. Does this mean Mcafee cleaned the viruses for me?

Tell me exactly how Mcafee on demand and on access scan should work. i am confused on how the program works and I want to know if the program is actually cleaning my computer.
