Mcafee or Norton? (See Below for Details)?

October 22nd, 2008 · 4 Comments

I’ve got a Microsoft Windows Xp laptop, and i recently had a trojan attack my computer, blocked me from pretty much doing anything i tried except go on the internet here and there. So i downloaded Malwarebytes’ anti-malware software and it cleaned it all out.

Now, i’m wondering which is better Norton or Mcafee for the Microsoft Windows xp laptop. I just need it to protect from viruses, trojans, worms and what not. (Or should i stay with the MBAM?)

P.S. I’m not into buying the anual protection stuff, i just need something to make sure I dont get another trojan to f*** up my system if you know what i mean
alright thanks willy

If you don’t buy the annual protection stuff then your anti-virus will only protect you against crap that was around when the subscription ran out, not against the crap that’s come out since.

McAfee is pretty average, Norton is pretty good but I’d get Avast free a-v. That and MBAM will keep you fairly safe.

I won’t be able to tell you which one is best, but I can tell you the weakness’s and strength’s of McAfee and Norton.

      McAfee:
92.5% detection rate. Very few false positives. A scanning speed of 14.7mb/sec (pretty fast.) Uses 87632K of ram while idle.

      Norton:
99.0% detection rate. Few false positives. A scanning speed of 22.2mb/sec (VERY fast.) Uses 8424K of ram while idle.

RAM info from: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/07/11/which-free-antivirus-is-the-lightest-on-system-memory-usage/ I don’t have much faith in these ram tests so I would take it with a grain of salt.

I use NOD32 and Avira on my computer, but it sounds like you’re looking for something light and free. I would recommend Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html and I would also keep MBAM.

      Hope all that helps.

I think both norton and mcafee are annual. The reason suites are annual is because they need money to keep the updates coming

A free security setup is a great alternative
Use either Avira Antivir Free or Avast! Home Edition
      http://www.free-av.com/
      http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
If you want a higher detection rate then choice Avira but if you want email and boot time scanning than pick Avast.
You may only have one antivirus and one firewall

You can have more than one antispyware though
Malwarebytes AntiMalware will keep you safe so I think your good with the antispyware

      Some extra stuff
Firefox is more secure than Internet Explorer

      Also get the MyWot addon

      Free firewall
You may only have one firewall
      Comodo firewall pro
