McAfee questions. please help. ?

I have Mcafee Total Protection and I think it updates definitions and all that stuff for 1 year. So i got it on August 20th 2008 and it will expire on August 21 2009. And it says it protects up to 3 computers.

I got a few questions being I never have any experiance or understand any antivirus software stuff.

1) What does it mean when I says it protects up to 3 computers? I installed it on my home computer. I’m thinking of getting a laptop. So if I install it on my laptop, how does McAfee know it now protects 2 computers?

2) If I install McAfee on my laptop will the free subscription date aug 20th 2008-aug 21st 2009, continue on my laptop or will it start from lets say for example dec 9th 2008 - dec 10th 2009?
