Hi I downloaded this for my firefox browser but I'm not entirely sure what it exactly does.
Is it just there to be used as a search engine to show green checks on safe sites or does it pop up with warning when you visit unsafe sites?
Thanks for any help

It does warn you about unsafe sites.
It also changes colour and has pop-up messages from the toolbar.
The search box is optional. It is just for doing safe searches from.
The easiest way to use it is to look for the warning symbols agains search results in geegle or yahoo or whatever.

McAfee SiteAdvisor should be down the bottom right corner of your screen in Firefox. Not to sure if it pops up though. If you are looking for something that does that, use the Web Of Trust add-on ( http://www.mywot.com ).
N.B I have heard that the McAfee one is out of date. Although, to be on the safe side, you could always use them both. Another good one is PC Tools Browser Defender ( http://www.browserdefender.com/download/ ). That one actually puts a check against all links not just search engine links.
On all of them, you can click the 'check symbol' for more detailed information.

Im using McAfee Siteadvisor past 2 yrs. This software is best.
This alerts whenever you go to an unsafe website. It only blocks when the website has "Breached Browser Security".
If you want to check, go to http://www.crack.ms . This website has breached browser security and McAfee will stop you.
SiteAdvisor is split into 4 ratings.
Secure / Safe (Green) / Warning (Yellow) / Bad (Red)
So check the toolbar whenever you enter a site. If you are in google, it would automatically show you the site rating beside the site result.
