McAfee subscription expired, not interested in renewing: does it still protect my computer to some extent?

October 30th, 2009 · 7 Comments

Hey. My McAfee subscription that had come free with my old AOL 9.0 SE service has recently expired, considering we no longer use AOL as an ISP even though McAfee continued to protect my computer for a few months after switching to Optimum. Well, McAfee keeps sending these little pop-ups saying that my subscription has expired and says my computer is not fully protected, asking me to renew. Only thing is, I don’t feel like shelling out money for a new subscription, so here’s where my question comes into play. Let’s say I want to uninstall McAfee to free up extra space on my computer–even though McAfee says my subscription has expired, does it still protect my computer to some extent or degree by any means? Like, for example, is there any chance McAfee is still protecting my computer, just on a more limited front than it used to? Or is it totally rendered useless now since the subscription has expired?

Just want to get some solid concrete answers before I decide to ultimately uninstall it. The only other anti-virus software I have is Avast, aside from McAfee.

Any answers/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Never use two anti-virus in one pc.Avast is very good indeed.Use it with some free firewall like comodo ,zone alarm. etc.Back it up with iobit security 360 free. and malware bytes free. And no,Mcafee won”t protect your pc after its license expires. And to tell you the truth, avast has more protection than mcafee.

Well if you have Avast on your PC, you don;t need Mcafee at all. Just uninstall it. If you have problems getting rid of it, use Appremover - free
      http://www.appremover.com/

you can add spywareblaster (free) for added protection - it works well with Avast and is effective in blocking bads sites and malicious downloads

Youll still have virus protection form viruses known as of the expiration date. But if a new virus/worm is created after the expiration date you WONT be protected, you wont be able to update, and wont have active internet filters. McAfee is great software you should consider renewing it..

McAfee will still be up and running protecting your computer. However, it won’t be updated, most importantly the virus definitions. With new viruses out each day or every so often, McAfee wouldn’t be able to protect you from new viruses. However, it will still protect you from its last updated virus definitions.

In your current case, I would suggest you just keep it for now until you find another virus software to keep your computer protected–since some protection is better than none right?

      Hi Ultra
that is a question which has no basis for a good answer.
who knows if you are protected. but should a very nasty virus arrive i for one would not like to trust Mc Afee to protect me.
Ironically to get rid of it you have to pretend you going to upgrade then decline is the only way to uninstall it..as i have had to do to several laptops.
At the present time i have been using Kapersky without problems but who knows how long it will be before even that fails to protect they all seem to have there day. Norton used to be fine till it went wrong on several platforms running XP so its a question of suck it and see i am afraid.

      hi
There are 3 solution to remove your mcafee
      1. Start - setting - control panel - Add remove programs

click chnage or remove program in that select mcafee and uninstall the software

      2. If you unable to remove the mcafee then follow the step

start - run in the run dialog box type regedit

the dialogbox is open in that select hkeylocal machine - software - mcafee
right click and delete the file the mcafee error will not appear

      3. If you getting this error message then start - run in the run dialogbox type msconfig and a new window will open in that select startup and and remove mcaffe

I know quite a bit about computers, mcaffe will protect it yes but you will not be able to scan your computer, i have a much better suggestion, hotspot shield is a good firewall it will mask your ip so its harder to send you viruses, for a virus protection free scanner i know one and downloads.com ill give you a link. http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?tag=contentBody;mostPopTwoColWrap

this is one of the most popular downloads right there and its virus free know worries i guarantee it is im using it right now AVG is free its a decent spy were checker it also searches for viruses and cookies.
if you don’t believe me or think it has a virus you can go to Microsoft website it self for a virus protection. My other suggestion and final is to buy norten anti virus if you willing to spend money(note never use two anti virus programs at once you can have 1 FIREWALL AND 1 ANRIVIRUS SCANNER or they will cancel each other) out so choose what you think is best and uninstall the others.
