i tried to restore my laptop using the recovery dvd. now, during the install, i encountered this error:
"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
please re-install a copy of the above file.
====
the thing is, the RECOVERY FILES are installed in my D: partition. i have 1 hard drive with two partition.
i tried to use an XP cd to run the Recovery Console but i cannot because it won't detect any hard drive.
i'm pretty sure the hard drive is working fine and installed correctly.
is it possible to fix the faulty recovery dvd by just copying it and rewrite the hal.dll file?

try to use this tricks….. create a bootable flash drive to install your windows xp also using your cd with a corrupt file of hall.dll with this directions at http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/installing-windows-xp-from-usb-thumb.html its kind a lot of process. after you created the boot usb download hall.dll and extract it to your bootable usb use it. it works in my case.
