About a week ago i was working on my desktop. I have known for a few months now that my monitor was going to go out any day.( its older then my tower.) While doing some work my monitor finally went out. I brought my computer over to a friends house, hooked everything up,(hooked the tower up to his monitor that’s working fine.) fan is working, lights on the tower all come on, you can hear everything booting up except the monitor wont turn on at all. I checked all the cords and everything is good. So my question is did i burn out my monitor port? if so easy to fix or easier to take somewhere to fix? If its not the monitor port blown out then what else could it be? Any advice would be great!!!!
The monitor that blew was a old beast. When it went it started to make a hissing noise and for the last few months the screen would shake every now and then. The monitor im trying to hook it up to now is a new LCD flat panel. I know the monitor is dead so a new monitor is a must ( well after i get the tower fixed.) but im wondering if it could be the port thats blown or maybe just the video card..

Is it a new, flat panel, LCD monitor? If it is, it is quite possible that the refresh rate and resolution is set too far out of range because of your old monitor, so the new monitor can’t read the signal coming in.
For starters, I would try hooking it up to an older monitor, changing the refresh rate to 60Hz, and turning the resolution up as high as it will go.
Are you certain it was your old monitor that stopped working? Maybe it was the video card in your computer.

Sounds to me like your video card is dead. Is your card integrated into the motherboard? Or is it just a pci-e card? How old is your motherboard, if you have an old motherboard i’d recommend a complete upgrade which will cost you about $500 including new cpu (core 2 quad, motherboard and new memory. If the computer is fairly new, then you can pick up a video card for about $150. Please make note when buying a video card. The slots used are VGA(Older) PCI-e (NEWER) etc. Make sure your computer has a free slot.
Also flat screen monitors have a different plug than regular old VGA monitors.
