I have the free edition of AVG 8.0 and ive used it for a few months, but maybe a little more than half a month ago or so it just stopped working. it would display the icon where all the other icons are, but instead of being the usual colorful square logo, its been a grayed out square with a red circle that has an exclamation point in it. when i would right click on it, 'Open AVG User Interface' and Check for updates' would both be grayed out, not allowing me to click on them. the only option from there would be exit. i would try that, then go to the icon on the desktop. i would click on it, but it would never open. 2 days ago, i finally got around to uninstalling it and reinstalling it. only yesterday, 1 day after installing it, its doing the same thing again. any advice? if i cant get it to work, give me some good advice for another free antivirus software please.
i see a lot of people also like avast, should i just ditch AVG and go with that?
one more thing, for the day after i reinstalled it, i did a virus scan and nothing was found

Cory,
When that shows up it means that you're AVG needs to be updated. But, if these options are blanked out, I'm not sure why it keeps doing it. IT may be possible that you have a virus. AVG is the best FREE virus scanner out there. Try using http://www.trendmicro.com and use the FREE Online Virus Scanner to see if your computer is infected!

Try contacting AVG and asking them what it means, or check their FAQ for any insight (or their help menu). I've not had a problem with it personally.
Unfortunately, AVG is the best virus software out there. I wouldn't recommend getting any other free one, and for paid, I'd only recommend McAfee. Norton always does screwy things.

When you were able to re-install, did you scan your system? It sounds very much like a virus to me! You can do a free online scan to check. These won't interfere with your locally installed program. Try the free one at http://housecall.trendmicro.com
You may need to turn off the system restore to clean some of these.
Then unintsall and re-install your AVG Free - use a new download from them (DIRECTLY) http://free.grisoft.com
Had a couple do this, both machines had a virus

I recently removed AVG and installed Avast and it seems to be more reliable then AVG, the interface is not as nice but you can choose your own skin.
