I had the same thing happen to me this afternoon. I didn’t try the reboot suggestion, but what I did was go to the AVG website and downloaded the updates that came out since (Aug 16th) and did a manual install. On the AVG program interface go to Tools and then Update from Directory. Fixed my problem

I got fed up with avg, I am now using avast, it is free and it works fine.

Un install then re install - If you have other anti virus programs installed it may conflict with them. Especially if they are running in the background. Contact the company if you have more problems as all these companies love feedback to improve help - Even the free versions
