My comp freezes from spyware/malware and all that stuff but…?

May 16th, 2008 · 11 Comments

How do I get rid of the viruses? I got Antivira and AVG (free edition) and I don't want anyone giving me a link to a website that scans and gets rid of your viruses, all you can do is scan with them and you have register by buying the thing to get the viruses removed. SOMEONE JUST SIMPLY TELL ME HOW TO GET RID OF THEM WITHOUT A WEBSITE BECAUSE I'M NOT PAYING FOR THEM TO BE REMOVED. The computer freezes on various game sites such as Runescape. How can I GET RID of these viruses WITHOUT PAYING and WITHOUT HAVING TO DELETE ALL MY COMPUTER FILES!

First problem is you have 2 anti-virus programs. You can only have 1 anti-virus program or expect serious problems. Get rid of one of those and then run the one you keep in Safe Mode (tap F8 as the computer boots up and choose to boot to safe mode).

Ideally you should run a virus removal program in Safe Mode (without networking) and reboot and repeat the scan and reboot until there is a cycle where no virus is detected.

The idea behind the Safe Mode is that the operating system would only load your essential programs and drivers to the memory and hence there is a “high” chance that the virus-infected file is on the drive but not loaded into memory. This would enable the AV to clean it easily and the next reboot/scan would detect nothing. There could still be a small possibility that one of the drivers or programs that are loaded by the OS in the Safe Mode is infected. That’s why you need to keep rebooting and rescanning to make sure you’ve found them all.

These days you need a whole lot more than just a virus protection. Only about 15% of all malware is viruses. The rest is worms, trojans, phishing schemes, spyware, etc.

Here's some ideas to make Internet Security Suite (securitycenter) for free. Free is always the best.

      ————————————–…

      1. For your Anti-Virus……(Always use only 1 A-V…You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict…(did I mention that you MUST uninstall any old anti-virus products?)

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!

      Download here:
      http://www.free-av.com/

Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular but has poor virus detection rates.

      ———————————-

      2. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs……………(use at least 1 anti-spyware, but 2 is OK). Do a scan with it on a regular basis.

      SUPERAntiSpyware:
      http://www.superantispyware.com/

      ————————————–…

      3. For your Firewall……….(Always use only 1 software firewall)

A decent free firewall is Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.21.329.

It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.

      http://www.comodo.com/

      ————————————-

      4. And to help protect your computer from ever getting infected with malware in the first place………… (use them both)

SpywareBlaster helps to immunize your computer again certain selected malware.:
      http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareb…

SiteAdvisor warns you when visiting a potentionally malicious web-site:
      http://www.siteadvisor.com/

      ———————————–

      5. And always keep your Windows and all your installed software 100% updated and patched with all critical and security updates from the vendors THIS IS A MUST! In Internet Explorer just click Tools then Windows Updates.

Here is a little online (no download) security tool called The Secunia Software Inspector, that checks a computer for un-secure, un-updated and un-patched apps that may be installed on your computer.

The Secunia Software Inspector checks for possibly vulnerable programs like Adobe, Winamp, Java, Windows, Internet Explorer etc. and notifies if critical security updates are needed. !

Will work using IE, Opera or Firefox.

      Use it once a month.

      Pretty cool and free at:
      http://secunia.com/software_inspector/

      Great luck! Enjoy!

I use` AVG free edition with no problem but also run two spyware programs, spybot and adaware both are free. You can download them at majorgeeks.com. There are also forums on majorgeeks that will give you step by step instructions on how to remove difficult viruses and spyware.

first and foremost, when removing viruses, disable system restore. In xp, right click on my computer==>Properties==>System Restore, then click disable system restore on all drives as many viruses will implant in the restore folder. A good free tool to download is hijackthis from download.com. When you install it, open the file click scan and save a logfile. Save the logfile to your desktop. Go to http://www.hijackthis.de and click browse and select the logifile. It will tell you which files to remove with hijackthis from user ratings. Be careful though, only remove files you are told to as removing windows processes can harm your computer.

Adding to what Sam said, there are plenty of helpful FREE forums out there manned by people who can walk you through getting rid of some of the nastier viruses.

But definitely, your first step would be to turn off one of your current anti-virus programs and run the other in safe mode. Rinse and repeat. When you've cleaned as much as you can clean automatically, if you still have a virus or THINK that you do, post again - preferably with the name of the virus if possible.

An antivirus program won't get rid of spyware or malware.

If it is viruses that are the problem AVG should catch it… running more than 1 antivirus program at a time is usually detrimental to system performance and they often conflict with eachother. I would keep the AVG (but just my opinion)

For getting rid of the spyware/malware:

      Try Spybot S&D (free)
      http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

      Also Adaware by Lavasoft
      http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5&cdlPid=10837062

Both free, download em both, install, update and run a full scan.

Those should clean your system up. You may need to run multiple scans with each.

      Good luck!

spyware/malware are different than a virus. You should get programs that address your problem. I like adware, spybot search and destroy. There are many links to mirror websites on avg's site for free personal use programs. Many of the links require some searching to find free editions which can be good because you see what the different programs offer. I would also suggest getting a firewall to block these intrusions. I would also recommend cleaning your computer out. Do you save a bunch of junk emails…delete them. Many music files? …move them to discs. Run disc cleanup and defrag your computer. With the games I play when expansions come out my computer has had problems keeping up with the games demands so I had to get more memory to keep up. Also, I don't know what kinds of sites you are using but many of these "free" game sites put a bunch of junk on your computer.

I had the same problem and I had to get a USB Port and download all my files on it then I clean out all the computer files . I barrowed a friends windows 2002 edition disk or if you have the money you can purchase 1 for $150 . I then loaded my computer up with it then I downloaded all my files back onto my computer. You can also ask around to see if someone has a crack copy of windows but if you do that be careful not to download any updates it will break the copy then your back at 1. good luck.
