My computer is responding very slowly for about a month. I dont know what seems to be the problem. I bought it 2 years ago and it was very fast. the computer is compaq presario. Also, I have avg protection and I scanned the computer for any virus yesterday. There were not any virus. Do you know what is causing this problem? Can you help me?
Everytime I click on one of my programs from the taskbar, it takes for the program about 5 seconds to show up. Also, sometimes, the screen turns blue when i do this.

Maybe you have TOO MANY programs installed.
When was the las ttime you did a defrag? Disk check? Disk cleanup?

You should look into adding more RAM. Also, check for spyware as well using Spybot Search & Destroy, and Ad-Aware 2008 both available from http://www.download.com.
Also as mentioned above, defrag your hard drive, run disk cleanup, and I'd also download RegSeeker to clean your registry and CCleaner to clean junk files out of your hard drive.

Reduce your visual effects using the control panel and use the cleanup tool (start>programs>systemtools), this will help. Also goto start>run and type 'msconfig' Check what startup services are listed, and remove the ones you don't need or things you don't use all the time. Make sure you don't remove anything important like your anti-virus. Try !Avast anti-virus instead of AVG, it is free but doesnt drag as much,

Well there might be to many apps running in the background and overall to many files and folders…. my suggestion is: delete old folders and files you don't need…remove apps you don't need…. and that kind of stuff just clean it up…..
but if it was going fine until you installed something it may of slowed it down… so if that's the case remove it and see how it gos… and if you where installing many things in that time…. remove some and just see which one is the one that slowed it down… there may be more then one programs that are slowing it down…. again if this is not the case…. just clean it up!
try maybe upgrading ram? de-fraging?
but it may just be showing its signs of age…. as they tend to do… so if that's the case and you get a new computer…. get a mac if you don't all ready have one….. they have real nice features and are much stabler so….. I can't explain it all cuz that would be even more off topic…. so hope this helps!!! Thanks!

There are several things that could cause this… Here are a couple things you can do:
1) Modify your Startup programs.
Whenever your computer turns on, there is a list of programs that are told to start, when windows has loaded. You can view and edit the list by going to Start | Run, and typing in MSCONFIG. Click on the Startup tab. You can uncheck the programs that you don't want to startup. If you are unsure of a program, you can google the executible file name (listed under the Command column)… ex: qttask.exe. Take caution when doing this, as you don't want to disable a program from starting up that is needed by your operating system. Chances are, however, that there are a lot of programs that you don't need starting up every time.
2) Use multiple programs to scan for viruses and spyware. Download CCleaner and run it before performing any scans. CCleaner will clean your system's temporary files… There is also a menu to view your start up programs… you can also clean the registry with this program… very useful.
3) Upgrade your RAM. Recommend RAM for Windows XP is 512mb. Depending on what you do with your system, you may want more (1GB is nice).

Your computer is running slowly because of all the stuff that has built up in your computer over the last two years. This includes programs you don't use, files left over from uninstalled programs, invalid registry entries, and unnecessary start-up items. If you follow all the following steps, your computer will run much faster. I guarantee it.
First, you will want to uninstall programs that you don't use often or don't need. I suggest using Revo Uninstaller. It not only loads faster than Windows Add/Remove Programs, but it scans your computer for left-over files that the original uninstaller might have missed.
Then, you will want to scan your computer for other unneeded files and registry entries that are taking up space. You can use a program called CCleaner for this.
Next, you will want to use a file called Autoruns.exe that will show you everything that starts up when your computer starts. It is designed by Microsoft to detect more start-up programs that any other method. When the list finishes loading, check Hide Microsoft Entries in the Options menu and press F5. As soon as the list is done reloading, check for things that don't need to start up such as files associated with already uninstalled programs and quick start processes or preloaders. Leave security programs such as firewalls and anti-viruses.
Then, you will want to download a program called SuperAntiSpyware to check for spyware and adware.
Last but definitely not least, you need to defragment your hard drive. I suggest you use a program called Defraggler, because Windows Disk Defragmentor doesn't usually do as good a job. This will probably take a few hours, so you might want to do it overnight.
To keep your computer running smoothly, you will want to do all these things at least once a month.
