software to avoid potentially hazardous viruses that could wipe out my files and permantly damage my computer. My lap top has been greatly slowed down by these non-stop ads for the past few days and I'm tempted to pay the $40 just to make them stop.
Since I must give the company (AntiSpywareMaster System Doctor) my credit card numbers and other personal info, I was worried if this could potentially be phishing. I don't want to get scammed. I trust my computer to not collude with scammers but I'm guessing they have a way of getting around my Toshiba's Firewall protection.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Additional info: I may have additionally had anti spyware and virus protection when I first purchased my lap top but that free protection expired over a year ago.

Do not get the software that is being advertised, buy a well known software package such as Norton, SpySweeper, of Spyware Doctor. Run those programs and that should remove most of the nasty stuff you've contracted. If you still have issues afterwards take it someone who can remove the viruses and spyware manually.

MESSENGER SPAM
XP Home:
this set up is for Internet Explorer alone
do you get pop ups claiming that your computer is at risk?
those are called "Messenger Spam" !
to stop messenger spam:
open start page
open administrative tools
open services
these services are in alphabetical order
you need to close two:
a] Alerter
b] Messenger
NOT related to MSN messenger or any other instant messenger
right click each service
click properties
from drop down menu,select disable
another method to deal with those that get through is to copy the pop up address at the top of the pop up or pop under [ starts up AFTER you close a window ]
open internet options [ start–control panel–internet options ]
open content tab
open settings
open enable
enter address
click never
close
open Advanced tab
check to see if pop up blocker is checked
close

There are several pieces of software that will help you clear off these adds at no cost. I recommend installing and running the below.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/single/trialpay.php
http://free.grisoft.com/
The later will update automatically and continue to protect your computer.
The other two you should run periodically to help keep the system clean.

It's a protection racket. They put spyware on your computer and are charging you to remove it–if they keep their promise and aren't scamming you.
Try ad-aware from Lavasoft, spybot search & destroy, hijackthis, and/or spyware blaster. They are all free–pop those terms into your browser and download them free. If one of those work, send the good company your $40 to buy a full version that automatically updates, or just give them a donation to support their battle against people hijacking computers. Don't buy what the spyware is selling you–you don't want to support those low lifes.

Popups=bad. You've probably contracted a virus. They can create popups- it's not just your computer's fault. You really should invest in some security software. I reccommend AVG Free and Spyware Doctor both. You've got to have protection. It is phishing for sure.

DO NOT i repeat DO NOT buy into these adds. These adds are a form of malware (spyware) that have found their way onto your laptop. (by trojan horse or some other means). The constant spam of ads is a result. They are attempting to extort money from you. I suggest purchasing an all in one suite (mcaffee, norton), after one quick scan you malware days will be over. Be careful what you download to avoid this problem again.
Good luck!

Hello,
It sounds like you have downloaded a rogue malware program. It will take a specialized program to remove this infection.
Simply uninstalling the program will probably still leave the computer infected.
A couple of months ago, I accidentally downloaded a program from somewhere that infected my computer with malware.
My malware infection was so bad, I thought that I would have to get a new computer.
It wasn't until I found a website in google that gave honest review of spyware and malware removers that I found Netcom3.
http://www.getridofspyware.info/netcom3/a4.html
I downloaded and registered it, and I couldn't be happier. It removed my malware infection, and also a couple spyware infections I didn't even know I had.
It has kept my computer running fast, and spyware free for a couple of months now. I highly recommend it.
The website I found can be visited above.
Hope this was helpful.

DO NOT PAY FOR THAT! It is most likely a scam. There are free programs out there, but if you want to spend some money on one I would go with Webroot Spy Sweeper.
For antivirus I would go with AVG or Avast. Both are free for home use.
For firewall, Zone Alarm is a nice free choice.

Don't do it!! Never, Never give out personal info. on the Internet.especially your credit card. Your Internet provider will have "free" updates that you can download if you feel it is necessary. Email them and tell them about your problem and maybe they can help.
