My computer is really slow it takes around ten mins for me to be able to open up anything when i switch it on!?

Is this because i have lots of things running? If so how do i clean up my Pc so it runs faster? (i reguarley do spy/adware/virus searches and clear the c drive of temp internet files etc) I have lots of spare room on my harddrive and i reguarley defrag it which seems to make little difference…Please help! Many thanks in advance..:)
