Hi firstly I doubt you have 7.5gb of ram if you do and only have 512mb free then there is something seriously chewing that up. If I were you back up your documents and perform a clean install of XP or whatever OS your using. For details formatting and installing XP then follow Method 4 on the following guide:

for a 7.5 gb of ram 515 mb of ram space is quite ABNORMAL.. u should be having atleast 5 gb of ram as free space… so check whether the additional memory modules are fixed in place and check whether they are available to use… u can check the total memory of ur computer by right clicking on the my computer icon and selecting properties… there it shows the processor and memory capability..
fyi: i have a 1.25 gb ram and i have 700 mb of ram as free space and im running an windows xp..
if u still have no problems with ur hardware u may be suffering a virus attack.. now a few viruses multiply themselves and occupy the ram space and keep the processor occupied…
so u have to Format ur harddrive fully and install a fresh copy of the operating system..

Try formatting, if it doesen't help it looks like your HardDrive might be dead.

the RAM is wrong, maybe is broken or something, but if it takes a long time to load a carpet, you should reinstall windows

There is no such thing as 7.5 gig of ram on a home computer.
Running windows!
Your computer has a lot of space for virtual memory.
What is the actual ram your system is using.
