My Computer Is So Slow & Keeps Freezing Up! Does Anyone Have Any Suggestions?

July 30th, 2008 · 6 Comments

I have a Compaq desktop (2005) and it's impossible to use. It goes super slow and usually freezes up within 5 minutes. Now, I've taken everything (music, pics, programs, ect.) that I can possible remove from the computer off trying to give it as much space as possible. I've even deleted temp. files. The C drive is free by 88%. I've defragmented it and it's fine. However, the D drive for some reason only has 14% free space. It doesn't even have enough to defrag properly. I can't figure out why this drive only has 14% free space. I feel it's the cause for all the problems. I have nothing left of my computer that I remove, and I'm not even sure what's and where's the stuff on the D drive is located. Most of everything is on the C drive.

Does anyone know what's going on? How can I get the computer moving faster and free up space on the D drive?

Any honest answers will be greatly appreciated.

the D drive is for system recovery. i feel u should backup all data and do a system recovery. if you dont want to do so, just disable all visual styles and use windows classic as the theme.do not use any wallpaper and keep as less icons on the desktop as possible. if possible try to increase your RAM

You should take it to a computer technician and get it looked at. Chances are, a virus might have entered your computer because my computer used to be super-slow (slower than Dial-up even) and we found out it was the result of a virus. Or, you could try reformatting the entire system, but you'll need to call your internet provider to get internet access back and everything else.

I think the D drive has your operating system. Some times the CPU heats up and it will cause the screen to freeze. Make sure the CPU fan is working properly. Also check that the cooling fan is working properly, this is the fan attached to the case.
Also blow away all the dust from the board. Use compressed air. You can buy a can at most stores that sell computer stuff Walmart sells it.

Your D drive is there to backup your stuff. For example if you downloaded a program that messed up your windows then you would use the System Recovery option to restore your data back to a date, which uses the D drive. I recommend not touching your D drive at all unless you don't care for system recovery.

You can also save any important files onto a hard disk or a CD and then delete the contents of your D drive.

What operation system do you have? (Windows 98?) And try downloading wise registry cleaner to clear up some stuff. http://www.wisecleaner.com/download.html download the trial

Also scan your computer for some viruses or trojans.

      I recommend http://www.avast.com/ for viruses
      and http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html for trojans.

Sounds like it could be loaded with spyware. As a precaution…

      Download SDFix here:

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

You can download and scan your computer for free.
