I’ve tried and done every thing I can think of and have been told. And this computer still sucks. My high-speed internet is incredible slow, and the computer in general is so slow that I can’t even open up any other programs. I don’t even have that much stuff on the computer, everything I don’t use gets uninstalled completely. I’ve gotten rid of programs that pop-up automatically on start up, I delete unnecessary processes when I turn it on. We’ve even tried that finally fast.com thing it it didn’t help at all. I only scan the computer when it’s needed and never when I’m trying to do other things. Honestly, I have no idea why it’s so slow. I literally can’t use anything on it but the internet-which is still ridiculously slow. This computer is totally up to date (I believe, I got last year).
It’s also a Dell, and I use Mozilla Firefox also.
I also know for a fact that it doesn’t have any viruses that would cause this - it got checked.
Does anybody know whats wrong with it? Can you tell me how to fix it and keep it fast?
p.s- I cannot afford to buy more Ram/memory or whatever.

You can’t afford $30 worth of RAM? because, judging by what you have done, that seems like the only thing that could help

I have been in your position before. This can happen. If it is not a hardware issue, (which it may be.) I would back up my data, and reinstall windows. It is not the most convienent solution. But it does provide a clean base to use. It also gets rid of all the programs that you do not use on a regular basis. Good Luck

Unfortunately your last comment may prevent you from fixing the problem. Sounds like a RAM problem to me.
I would assume if you bought it last year, you are probably running Vista, which like every generation of OS, requires more RAM than previous generations.
Are you running Vista? And how much RAM do you have?

Ok first of all you shoudn't have got finallyfast thing it is useless
http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/finallyfast.com
Sorry I scold anyone who buys that junk
Also RAM is cheaper than finallyfast software(considered malware by me)
Instead use Ccleaner along with these methods to speed up pc
Ccleaner is freeware
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Ok check for SPYWARE instead of viruses. Spyware can be such a system hog
Use these(free versions that remove spyware)
The paid versions are just for realtime protection
Get the free versions of
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Ok now if you found spyware then good but if you didn't try disabling unneeded startup programs. Most startup programs don't popup
Go to start>run>msconfig>startup
Use this guide to disable the startup programs you don't need
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
You could try a disk defragmenter but it's usually the last reason of a slow pc but its good for the computer anyway
Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter
Also remember to use Ccleaner!

there are viruses that can not be detected
try glary utilities it will clear trojans and other malware also.
then why not switch over to LINUX UBUNTU 8.04 and see the performance, install it, it will go in dual boot mode
Ubuntu is a free OS and meant for slower PCs and atleast 128 Mb RAM is required more is always welcome.

you may still have a virus/trojan or worm, you AV may have not picked it up, see link below for which is best AV.(believe it or not)
5 things that slow a pc down:
1. A Cluttered Registry
2. Too Many Start-Up Programs
3. Full Hard Drive
4. Not Enough Memory
5. Spyware and Malicious Programs.
I use System Mechanics 8 as a house keeper program. One key good for three PC’s, share with friends??

You may have already tried these options but if not its worth a try.
1. Run a couple anti spyware applications
ie. Adaware by lavasoft and or spybot (both have free versions)
when in install these they may add extra processes if configured with some of there automatic features. They can all be shut off though
2. Run a defrag
3. Check your hard drive space overall if its reaching its limit this can slow down a computer. This is located by going to my computer and right clicking on the drive itself typically the c: drive
4. Another thing to do is check local services that offer you to bring your computer in for a cleanup. This can be expensive and you should always make sure you can trust the company doing it.
LAST RESORT!
5. Sometimes the system can just get bogged down with junk after a period of time to the point that its really hard to clean. Dell ships with a system restore disk which clears the system of everything on the main drive and brings it back to factory defaults. KEEP IN MIND THIS CAN DELETE ALL DATA ON THE MACHINE if you do this have someone who is familiar with it assist you. you have to back things up before doing this REPEAT YOU CAN LOSE EVERYTHING STORED ON THE MACHINE!
Hope this was helpful

Safe Mode Bootup
=============
Try this, its easy and will not harm anything
Slowly tap the F8 key while the computer is powering up
Just after the screen goes blank, the F8 key will point the computer to a menu where safe mode can be selected.
Note if you mistakenly tap F8 key again, it will continue through to normal boot
Scroll and select last known good configuration.
This is stronger than doing a system restore in normal mode. See list..
Wait till the boot has finished before clicking anything.
(System restore is the first line of restoration.
The second line is last good configuration.
The third line is system restore in safe mode.
The fourth line is repair from your disk recovery console.
The fifth line is a delete partition with clean install).

I would try these steps.
1. Defragment your hard drive.
2. Go to http://pcpitstop.com/
3. On the left of their page you should see Full test- Free
4.Do all the steps after that to take the full test.. You must use internet explorer for this.. not firefox.
5. You will have to allow for activex control in your browser for the tests to run.
6. After the test is done a results screen should come up and tell you if your system is in good shape or not. And what problems you might have.
7. If you cant figure out how to repair the problems listed, copy the web address of your results and email them to me. I can help you fix most problems the test may tell you.
8. Pcpitstop will try to get you to buy their optimize program which is very good but I can solve your problems for free.

People are quick to blame hardware and shell out cash, but 1st you may want to consider:
How often do you run disk cleanup and defragment your hard drive ?
File fragmentation is a sure way to slow down an entire PC.
Another thing I suggest is downloading anti-spyware that updates often.
(Lavasoft - Adaware is good and free)
