I was having computer trouble and tried to make a recover and in the process somehow lost the hal.dll. I no longer have the O.S disc and dont want to spend 100 dollars on a new one and am thinking of getting linux but how do i installl it if i can’t even get past the "windows could not start because the following file is missing." message
How DO i install it i have it in my portable harddrive but can’t get to it
Would someone be willing to Email, or IM me to walk me through DLing and setting up linux please its my first time trying to use it (i’m on my mothers computer now I have blank CDs and a portable harddrive if that helps)

well i would suggest try out some live-cds of linux. just insert them in ur dvd drive and it boots straight from ur dvd rime and not harddisk. try it trouble free and u can also install it. its very easy. for new linux users i would reccomend MANDRIVA or try out UBUNTU. i prefer mandriva though. and remember when installing linux, u would be using gparted for partioning hard disk- use resize windows partion instead of complete formatting.. in dat case u can recover windows in future
well i didnt catch that additional details part. well if it is image file of a live cd then u can boot directly, just change boot order in bios 2 ur usb HDD i guess. then restart

Once you download, burn the file onto a dvd and then put the dvd in your cd-ROM drive as soon as you start your computer

For future reference, HAL.dll stands for hardware abstraction layer, and makes accessing hardware for programming easier. In order to replace it you will have to boot into an alternative operating system from removable media and then replace the file, if you have another installation of windows, you can copy the file from it and replace it.
