well i would suggest try out some live-cds of linux. just insert them in ur dvd drive and it boots straight from ur dvd rime and not harddisk. try it trouble free and u can also install it. its very easy. for new linux users i would reccomend MANDRIVA or try out UBUNTU. i prefer mandriva though. and remember when installing linux, u would be using gparted for partioning hard disk- use resize windows partion instead of complete formatting.. in dat case u can recover windows in future

well i didnt catch that additional details part. well if it is image file of a live cd then u can boot directly, just change boot order in bios 2 ur usb HDD i guess. then restart

      windows vista recovery disk download:

      http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/

Once you download, burn the file onto a dvd and then put the dvd in your cd-ROM drive as soon as you start your computer

For future reference, HAL.dll stands for hardware abstraction layer, and makes accessing hardware for programming easier. In order to replace it you will have to boot into an alternative operating system from removable media and then replace the file, if you have another installation of windows, you can copy the file from it and replace it.
