Defragging doesnt help ur pc one bit. if u want ur pc to run good as new then i would say reformat ur computer and backup any important data before u do that.

First place I'd look is in the task manager performance tab to find out how much processor is being used and how much ram. If the processor and or ram is being maxed out, look in processes to see whats doin the gobbling

Luke needs tostick to fixin sandwiches! allthough not in your case, defragging CAN be very effective in speeding up a pc.

hit your start key and R at the same time this will be bring the run command then you will type msconfig then you will go to start up then disable everything you see, after that restart, windows should come up run antivirus and antispyware go to the major competitors of these programs and run there free check up and see what you have in the computer.

use the clean disk utility under start, programs, accessories, system tools
then a defrag then spyware and virus scans if possible a registry scan but that one you have to find a good program for it

If its running CONSIDERABLY slower (like 3 min + slower) then you probably have a virus, or you have a HDD which is close to breaking- I’m guessing its between 3-5 years old if this is the case. I would buy another one. They are relatively cheap, and can make a dramatic improvement in your system. I like Seagate the best- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148139

      Heres a list- http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150014%2050001305%201035507776%20103530105&name=250GB%20-%20320GB
