My computer seems to be infected with spyware, grayware… I don't know how to remove it… Please help?

April 3rd, 2008 · 9 Comments

My desktop computer is not connecting to internet. Called Dell today and based on what I told them, they said it's infected with spyware (grayware?).They are charging $129 for fixing it. HONESTLY, I'm broke and can't pay that much for one time fix. But the Dell guy told me that I could try figuring out how to do it by myself from another computer if I go on support.dell.com. Long story short. I tried some things there, but can't seem to make any sense of it. If anyone knows step by step instructions on how I can scan and remove spyware for free, please share! I have PC-cillin Antivirus, if it's relevant in any way. Was told it had nothing to do w/ spyware. Also, can i remove spyware working from another computer, such as laptop? Or do I have to work in the security mode in order to go online? THANK U in advance. When answering, keep in mind that u are dealing with someone who knows very little about computers : ) Would really appreciate if u could keep it simple & detailed. THANKS

Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info

There are two very good anti-virus and anti-spyware free programs. You can get AVG anti-virus here:

      http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1/us/frt/0

      and the anti-spyware companion here:

Since you don't have an internet connection on the affected computer, you can put the install files on a jump drive. Then install and run. It will get your system clean, but I doubt that is the actual problem. Most spyware wants your internet connection working so it can send its information about you to someone you don't want to have it. But whenever you have a problem with a computer, if rebooting doesn't fix it, you should always do a malware check before anything else. This could fix it.

      1. Download and run firefox to protect your from future spyware attacks and pop ups which are coming in through internet explorer (Trojan downloaders, win32 ) .Then update your windows through firefox
Browser attacks aren't easy to spot because they piggyback on legitimate traffic that doesn't exhibit many obvious warning signs

install addition protection into firefox with
