My laptop says I'm connected to my wireless internet, but Internet Explorer pages won't open, help?

May 25th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I use Windows XP on a Toshiba laptop, use Internet Explorer and connect wirelessly to my Telstra Broadband Internet using a Belkin wireless modem-router. I was on the internet, and then all of a sudden I couldn't connect to any webpages at all on Internet Explorer, but it says that I'm still connected to my wireless internet connection (54 MB's, excellent signal strength) I tried other programs using the internet (MSN messenger, Limewire) and neither connected aswell. Can someone tell me how to get my internet working again?

Again, it says it's connected, but I can't load any pages on Internet Explorer, nor can I connect to MSN. If it helps, I troubleshooted my MSN Messenger connection, and it said that the Key Ports and DNS weren't correct. PLEASE HELP

I've also checked my router, and it all seems fine. The wireless internet icon is lit up, as per usual. I'm currently on my home computer, which uses the same internet connection exactly the same way. and I can access everything.

It seems like you may need to reset the TCP/IP Stack on Windows XP.

Go to Start, Run, in the box type CMD and press Enter.

      Type

      NETSH INT IP RESET RESETLOG.TXT

Reboot your computer. If that doesn't work try…

      NETSH WINSOCK RESET

      Should get you back online.

if your ie is not set up right, it will stop going online when its cache is full.

      IE7
      =======
Over time IE7 seems to set its own (or programs do) tick boxes in the advance tab.
      In IE7 Tools >Internet Options >Advance Tab
Click Restore advance settings defaults button.
Then scroll the listings down to near the bottom and:
Tick empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache, which if not empty, will stop you from going online).
Bullet disable phishing filter (optional. Leave it on if you want that type of protection, usually for financial data like internet banking)
Delete Browser History, cookies, add ons, the whole lot regularly.
Close the browser to set the settings.

Dont think its anything to do with the cache or TCP/IP settings or anything like that. You seem definitely to have picked up a trojan virus or a piece of "malware" which is blocking web pages from loading at source, that is within your browser's internet config settings,

Seein that it happened suddenly, this would seem to be the case. Sometimes if you go on certain sites like music downloads or "unusual" sites you can pick up viruses or other malware that you dont even know about and these can cause havoc with your Explorer settings - this is where the "DNS" messages are coming from.

Make sure your firewall and antivirus package is up to date.

Something similar happened with my PC and after checking everything like you did, I downloaded a trial copy of "Prevx2" and installed it on my PC. It found the trojan or malware and cured it. After that I had no problems.

Since you have no access to pages, log onto someone else's machine, download a copy of Prevx and save it to your memory stick. Install it on your own laptop and hopefully your browser will be sorted.

      Here's the link: http://www.prevx.com/

Choose 'Downloads' and click on 'Prevx2'

To Masterblaster…prevx wont even scan without internet service after I downloaded it to my external hard drive…the scan was still looking for internet service.
