My laptop was infected by a severe virus before, and the antivirus caught it and supposedly repaired it BUT?

July 24th, 2008 · 4 Comments

it was after the virus has already spread all over my hardware but i did not format my computer right away because i thought it would be troublesome since i had to backup and reinstall the windows, all that stuff. but after that, i found something strange which is, my hardware now has over 75000 files. Whenever I scan my computer using my antivirus software, the number of files it scanned is over 75000. I do not think my PC has that many files in it. And I am sure it's because the virus infected and copied so many weird files stored in my C driver. I can't see the add/remove buttons which is why i can't remove those weird named programs from my computer. But, I haven't taken it so seriously until now because i can format my computer whenever i want to.

What i am wondering is if it's usual and normal that just ordinary laptop mostly used for internet, documents, etc has over 75000 files (which i think are too many)

75,000 isn't that much. Remember that that your internet history will be included in that and each page you have visited on the internet can consist of many files.

it is very possible to have that many or more with vista

depending on whats on your drive to begin with
but look for a program to find duplicate files

program like system mechanic pro 7

You needn't worry about _how many_ files you have on your HD, but how much space they take up. Open up "My Computer", right click your Hard Drive, and click Properties. Keep an eye on that Pie Chart from time to time. That's the important stuff.

Also, I would really recommend a fresh install of Windows. Viruses have a nasty habit of getting into nooks and crannies where they can accidentally be reactivated.

Or you could get Linux, where you can't accidentally get stuff like that.

75000 is not a lot. it's probably internet cache, cookies, etc. that you haven't cleaned out in a while.
