My PC is Win XP Professional version 2002
Intel(R) Celeron (TM) CPU, 1000MHz
668MHz, 240MB of RAM, 80GB.
Its a bit slow to boot-up,it takes a long time to open Microsoft office applications such as MS Word. Sometimes it tells me that my computer is too low on virtual memory. Most of the games that I’ve installed in it(GTA Vice city & Need for speed hot pursuit)either don’t play at all or they become slow & soundless when playing. I have an antivirus(AVG) which I update often, what might be the problem?
I’m thinking of upgrading the RAM from 240 to 520,will that help?

More RAM would help a lot and since it’s pretty cheap right now you should upgrade to at least 1GB.
Another thing that will help immediately is to do the following.
In XP click start then run
In the run box type msconfig
Click on the startup tab
Uncheck everything except your anti virus and firewall
Click ok and reboot
A harmless warning will appear when you boot just check do not show this again.
You should see a pretty noticeable difference.

First of all, I’d recomend running defragmentation in the Control Panel. Then go to Start–>Run–> Msconfig. Here you can see and decide which programs load when your windows starts up.
Finally, get rid of AVG and get Avira free antivirus. http://www.avira.com/en/download/index.html
It’s free, and it doesnt require much memory.
Hope it helps.

First of all youre right. you need to upgrade your ram to atleast 512. The recommended ram for xp is 256mb and you have less than that. Each time i upgrade my ram i feel an decreases my shutdown and boot and application start up times.

AVG is a memory hog. but upgrading would be the best thing you could do right now. AVG does slow it down a little on that little of memory.
Also maybe you would think about getting a video card. that would boost your performance

More RAM is a definite plus to speeding up your PC….512MB would be a minimum.
In all honesty, you cannot expect state of the art XP performance with an older Celeron like that one.
Also, you can increase the size of the virtual memory in the “advanced” tab of Computer Properties.
Use the Task Manager to see where your resources are being used & how much free RAM your PC has when it is idle. This will give you an indication of what performance to expect when actually running applications.
As well, try to eliminate any unnecessary TRS programs (the ones that show up on the taskbar next to the clock every time you start Windows).
These suck up resources before you even start using your PC.

More RAM. 1 gig recommended minimum! Are you running any anti-spyware? Also necessary. Sorry you’ve got a Celeron, That is a Pentium processor with the L2 stripped off. That won’t help any in the speed department. After cleaning any spyware and virus files do a disc cleanup and then defrag the HDD. ;-)=
