alright, here are my specs:
windows XP home
pentium 4 1.6GHZ
128mb RAM (<- i know i need around 256+)
32GB Hard drive (4.97 free GBs)
I defragmented my hardrive, cleaned registry, deleted old proograms and proceses that are un-essential to it. when idle, my processor is only running at 2%, with virtual memory of 156mb out of 400mb
what is causing my computer to run kinda slow? Mal ware?Virus? Spyware? etc?
PS i know i need at least twice as much ram but my computer is still fast enough with out it. There is something else making itcreep along at the speed of irritation
suggestions please. (i also need a good free low memory fiewall and/or virus scanner (and fixer with out purchase))
even though my prcessor appears unoccupied, my computer still acts slow.
alright i will do that. MORE RAM! i have computer cards and processers, andRAM everywhere, actually like 2 gigs worth but it is all different formatt then the 128 stick currently in my running one. I opened up a computer from my computer APPS class and saw that RAM, probably a 256+ stick, so i will add that in. Probably i will steal another one two so i have two!

O.o
You can get a better computer for like 300$ on ebay, or by building it yourself than that.
Although it's still not as bad as my old laptop
It could be your hard drive getting old. When the HD gets old, the computer lags on it waiting for it to retreive the information to feed to the processor.

p4 has only 128 ram?!?! upgrade it to like 512 or something. then it won't be slow. i have a p3 at 0.7GHz with 256 ram and it doesn't lag for the most part, even as i open office 2007

You need memory. You should bring it up to 512MB. It'll cost about $70. Do it today. If "my computer is still fast enough with out it", you wouldn't be complaining.

Well, as you point out, RAM is probably your biggest problem. 128 mb is EXTREMELY low.
Now, let's suppose you are right in that it usually runs fast enough for you, but it's very slow now. Looks like you've done quite a bit of "maintenance" to try to speed it up. Here's a couple of other things you can try.
For a FREE anti-virus program, you might try AVG or AVAST.
For a FREE firewall program you might try ZONEALARM.
And for a FREE spyware eliminator I suggest 2 programs: AD-AWARE and SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY .I suggest running both of these because what one misses the other usually catches.
Another FREE program you might try is CCLEANER which can do a great job of eliminating history and temp files from your internet surfing (and more).
All of these free programs are readily available for download from the internet. AD-AWARE, SPYBOT, & CCLEANER are only in memory when you run them. Otherwise they won't be hogging up any of the memory you have. The others are obviously programs that need to remain active while you are online if you want them to do their job.
Good luck.

dude it seams like you have a very low ram……try to upgrade it with atleast to 512mp that is what windows xp recomend…….the other thing is that try to free some harddrive space……or add a harddrive……that can increase the speed……good luck……:):):)

WOW, I'm surprised the poor thing is running at all since you have it completely loaded down. First of all, go out and get a 40 or 60G external hdd and get mosst of your stuff on it and give the poor machine some room to work with that itty-biity mem it has.
A machine will run with 256m much much better.

Good Day…..You didn't specify if you have a video card…I think in your specified specification you do not have a separate video card….a lot of memory will be used by built in video… I suggest you buy a separate video card if your computer can accommodate it and increase your memory….this will boost the capability of your PC….
