ok i have left 4 dead. i stick the game disc in then install steam it installs fine. then i try to open it and it comes up with an error that essentially says that i am missing the steam.dll file. I go and download the installer off the steam website. it does the same thing. i went on the net and downloaded it. and then it says im missing steamUI.dll i got it too but this time it doesnt progress. it appears that my installiation doesnt put in the dlls. Sny idea how to fix this / what is wrong / a place to get a download tht doesnt do this?

Do you have a firewall that might block Steam from accessing the Internet? I'm not 100% sure but I think Steam is supposed to download those DLLs and it failed to do that and therefore cannot start. So one thing you could try is check if you have a firewall blocking Steam from accessing the Internet.

firewall is the problem, turn it off when you install steam
