Need DLL’s (for Kernel?)?

I'll be honest, I have no idea what my friend did to her computer.

She saved everything on her ipod, and wiped her computer and then reinstalled it. after a day of working fine (with alot of restarts thanks to her virus protection says she) her computer doesn't turn on right or.. something.

she gets an error saying "Need DLLs" and I look on the net and I assume she means "DLLs for Kernel" which is the most popular thing on the net .

I get, sorta how to do this "an in-place upgrade, you’ll need to boot from the WinXP CD, which might require that you enter the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) of your computer and enable the Boot From CD option. Then, when the install starts up, select the Install WinXP option and follow the remaining instructions."

problem is, I don't know how to explain how to fix it in.. well dumbed down english. She's no computer whiz and neither am I. Can anyone explain how do this in terms that a normal teenager can understand?

She refuses to wipe her comp again because she doesn't want to lose everything she reinstalled.
