Well! That is an actually an adware and not a virus.
See how it attracts you to “Download protect software now.”
You could have previous downloaded/installed a program which could have caused this.
Anyway, get an anti-spyware to get rid of it.
This will help you choose the anti-spyware that you need(some are even free) :

I’ve had those as well, and they are a lousy way to advertise / sell programs that supposedly repair the problem.
What you need to do is get one of the FREE Adware programs, and I would also suggest getting a FREE Spyware, and a FREE AntiVirus program. Download and install them and run a FULL scan of your computer… they will probably find a bunch of infections, and they should clean them up for you.
Last time this happened to me, it was just before I was going to backup my system. The adware that I got really fowled things up on my system, and after running full scans on adware, spyware and virus, the problem was still on my computer! I had to completely reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows XP. I do a backup of my system once a month, and so I lost a month of wanted files, but I did manage to use my last backup to restore a bunch of stuff.
This is why I suggest you also invest in a good backup system, like an external hard drive, or a zip drive… or, if you have a CD/DVD RW drive, use a CD or DVD for your backup.
Two good places to check for free malicious file checkers (adware, spyware and virus checkers), look in Yahoo Download, or CNET’s Download.com, and you can search for the programs you want, and then narrow your search to free programs, etc.
Good luck!

It’s unlikely to be a virus as such, but a malicious codec from a fake program which will prompt you to purchase the crap and you will then be out of pocket and have more problems.

This is not a limited version but a full tool to clean your computer from Malware, Spyware, Trojans, Backdoors, Worms, Dialers and Keyloggers.
How to use:
http://cotojo.wordpress.com/2008/07/07
If the problem persists, turn OFF System Restore and scan with the above programs in Safe Mode, Right click My computer > select Properties > System Restore Tab > Tick Turn Off System restore on all drives.
After scans are complete and machine is clean remember to turn system restore back ON and create a new restore point.
Once your scans are complete and your machine is clean, uninstall some of the programs, I suggest that you keep Malwarebytes for manual scanning, Spyware Doctor for realtime monitoring and Spybot. The remainder can be removed to save drive space, but you may want to keep the installers for future use.
