I am trying to set up a network between a laptop running Vista Home wirelessly connected to a router and a Desktop running XP that is currently connected to the router via ethernet cord.
I have both machines on the same workgroup.
In vista, I can see the desktop in the network map, but I am unable to see it in the list of computers and devices.
I cannot see the laptop at all on the XP Desktop.
I have removed all firewalls and turned off the windows firewall, however I still cannot connect to either!

This is a really "wishy Washey" process… Sometimes it works, And most of the time, it dosent. Microsoft needs to rethink their networking system… Keep playing with it, And it will eventually work, I had to work on one for a solid week till it worked, but i HAD to make mine work, its our only way to share printers.

XP, especially Vista, like to keep themselves hidden. I've done this before, and the last step you probably missed was enabling file & printer sharing on both machines.

what version of vista, what version of xp? the home versions will not join a domain.
peer to peer, make sure they are in the same workgroup.
sharing and permissions are set to share
firewalls OFF for now. You can use your router as the firewall.
DHCP server?? or static IP address? same subnet!

1 control panel
2 Network and Internet—>set up file sharing
3 network discovery—>turn on
secondly
1 control panel
2 security–>allow a program through firewalls
3 check–>wireless device
