Originally the problem started off when my first internet security program (AVG) wouldnt update its definitions as per its routine, but everything else still functioned properly so left it and tried to scan my system using adware but that too wouldnt update. So i uninstalled both and downloaded zone alarm but that isnt updating its definitions either.
At no point were any of these programs running simultaneously. And my scans without updated definitions arent finding any viruses or spyware.
Can someone please help me with this problem?

Do you have a Firewall ? It seem the Firewall might be blocking the updates.
Also, AVG says it cannot run the update, you have to try two-three times and it works.
Same with Ad-Aware, it happened to me as well. Try a few times.
But first, you need to look at the logs and messages of your firewall to see it it blocked any incoming/outgoing messages from these programs.
