Norton 2008 is interfering with system restore - how to disable it?

July 12th, 2008 · 6 Comments

To be honest, my computer seems really screwed up - I just got it not a week ago.
All I've done on it is play runescape and go to facebook.
All of my problems began when the Java V6U7 came out, I downloaded that and my internet connection cut. I couldn't get it back until I uninstalled the update.
Now I can't preform a system restore. I've read that the Norton Anti-virus program can interfere with the System Restore process, so I was wondering if anyone know how to disable it momentarily (NOT UNINSTALL IT) so i could do the system restore and be on my merry way again.

Note: I do have some idea what I'm doing with computers. I've attempted a system restore through safe mode, which did not work either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I very well might do something drastic such as drop this computer on a passing car if I cannot fix this issue.
Edit: I cannot click the icon in the bottom right and click "Quit" or "Stop" or anything of the sort. There is no option to do so. Nor is there any option in the Norton control panel to do so. I haven't been able to find any way to disable it short of uninstalling it, which I would really rather not do, seeing as I like using the internet.

ALSO: Problems after the Microsoft update? That could be it, but it could also be Java (which SHOULD be uninstalled, but for some reason I think it's still lingering), or Norton, or… *sigh* I hate computers.
Final Update: THANK YOU USELESS. That was exactly what I needed. I knew it was Norton that was stopping the system restore for it's own protection. Problem Solved, and good day to you all.

Right-click the icon in your task bar and click 'exit'
(those icons to the far right of the windows start bar)

(the option could use different wording like 'quit norton…')

Unplug your internet while you're down though, just to be extra sure

You can turn it off completely until you have you are done with whatever your trying to do.

Just go into the settings and set everything to off… or low..

As far as I know Your antivirusprogram can be switched off.
Do that and then do your system restore.

Ps a few weeks a Microsoft update caused similar problems to my computer. Are you sure it is Norton which is to blame?

Go to the link below, i had the same problem.
Add this site to your favorites for future reference, and make sure you are disconnected from the internet when you disable Nortons.
Try and relax when you have future problems with your computer or it will drive you nuts.

First issue is first. Get rid of Norton! It will eat up your resources and it's not the best product in the world.
      I suggest…AVG! :-)
      It's free and simple.
Go to…www.downloads.com, and type in AVG (do this however after you have uninstalled Norton or else you will KILL your computer.)
Second, if you REALLY want to keep Norton and you have one of those 2 year deals with Norton that you cannot get out of, what I would do is this.
Right click on your Norton icon. On the right side of your computer (those little icons there) and select disable. This should momentarily disable your Norton, and you can do a system restore.
If you have VISTA..good old vista, in your 'start search' all you have to do is type in system restore, and it will take you to where you can restore your files.
Now, the BEST place to find any information on what to do with Norton, would be to go to Norton itself, and go to the Help Desk. (or the quesiton/answer forums) Some of them are hard to search for, but others are easy and understandable.
Sorry (I know how bad computers suck too. I work for microsoft and believe me, it's not easy)
Hope that answered your quesiton. (TRY AVG! It's free and it works SOOO much better!)

just a suggestion, get rid of norton, go read up on the flaws of that program, system security, it is pre programmed with a multiple BDO, and will give remote access to an unknown user, btw, u need 2 get another OS also, Windows is very unreliable, try some sort of open source *nix OS, try mac, don't support microsoft
