Hi, I’ve just recently got a new windows vista laptop about 1 month ago. I bought a brand new copy of the Norton 360 anti-virus software. It was working fine until yesterday when it didn’t load up properly on my computer. Every time I clicked on it, it said it had a ‘BAD IMAGE error’ I will copy it up exactly as it appeared -
‘MAINSTUB.EXE - Bad Image
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSet.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.’
I have tried to search what the cause of this error was on the internet, and nobody really had a definite answer as to why this was happening. Some people suggested to others, who had a similar problem to me that they should scan their whole computer for malicious software as a virus may be causing this. I thought this was unlikely as I only ever go on wikipedia, youtube and google when surfing the internet but decided to scan my whole computer anyway with my other firewall/antivirus program - ‘Drive Sentry’. After scanning my whole computer, Drive Sentry said that there was no malicious or harmful software on my computer and that it was running normally. I did not expect this. The error itself suggests that I re-install the anti-virus software but I can only dowload 3 copies from the CD i purchased. I have already used 2 copies of the Norton 360 anti-virus software, one on my computer and another one for my friends computer. I do not want to risk using the last copy of Norton 360 on the CD, because while I was searching on the internet, I read countless reports of people re-installing their anti-virus’s and programs but upon shutting their computers down and then opening them up again, the same problem still occurred. Does anyone know how on earth to fix this problem or know the cause of it? Could it possibly be a strong virus that could not even be detected by my virus scan or something else can be simply fixed and is nothing to worry about? Please give your best thoughts and solutions. All answers will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
From,
The Count

The problem is on the very first word…..Norton! Ask before you buy.

Good ole Norton…. I suggest you email Norton direct and tell them of the problem. They are the only people who can reset your 3 user account status, even though you have used 2
I VERY much doubt that a virus would be inside Norton, maybe you have found a bug in the program and they can send you a patch or give you informed help to solve the issue.
Good Luck

There’s not much help on Norton’s web site. Their Support section is really no more than a sales tool. First, I’d uninstall Norton and then reinstall, just to be sure there wasn’t a hickup during the initial installation. If that doesn’t do it, and I don’t think it will, I found the following and several like it online: http://forums.spybot.info/archive/index.php/t-26638.html. Sounds like you may have a stubborn little infection there. Pay careful attention to the locations where you can download combofix and which logs to examine
