I installed Norton 360 last night through an expiring version of Norton Antivirus Basic (I think that's what it was called), and paid nearly 60 USD to their website, downloaded, installed, and rebooted. I let it reboot overnight, woke up to find a black screen with a blue window telling me the System could not open. I own a Gateway FX laptop and rebooted it many times, same message. According to diagnostics of the Startup Repair, the "Root Cause" (or something like that, the laptop isn't right in front of me) is an issue with a patch that is preventing the system from running. Since I downloaded it, I don't have an uninstall disk, and I wouldn't be able to reach it if I downloaded it because I can't boot the OS. I have important files on this laptop, so I cannot do a complete restore of the laptop, and, since I'm very novice with tech-terminology, please write your answers in lamen's words. Thanks. Oh, and, also, I don't want to take this to a shop b/c it will cost me 200 USD.
I will be calling Norton tomorrow for a refund, by the way. But I don't expect them to tell me how to fix the problem. Besides, I'd prefer to fix it myself and keep the laptop. I have a paper due tomorrow that is on the laptop…

You can try and Boot into safe mode then uninstall norton.
Turn on the computer. Start tapping the F8 key until you see a menu and choose Safe Mode.
When in Safe mode go to the control panel and uninstall Norton.
Also when in Safe mode you can do a system restore.
Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System
Click "Advanced System Settings" from the left side panel
Click the "System Restore" button from the "System Protection" tab.
You'll be offered a recommended restore point (the last one taken). To select from what is available, pick, "Choose a different restore point" and you'll get a list. By default this list only shows restore points taken in the last five days (check the box at the bottom of the dialog to see them all).

I have seen that problem on other computers. While Nortons is a good product overall, it has a tendency to slow computers down.
I recommend http://www.avast.com for the free antivirus, and http://www.lavasoftusa.com Adaware / Microsoft Windows Defender for anti-spyware.
However, you should call Norton's for support, as it seems you are having a data corruption issue as a result of the install.
