i purchased a computer a year ago which was loaded with norton antivirus and webroot spy sweeper, do i really need both of them? the renewal came up for norton a month ago so i renewed it, then the webroot came up for renewal, i'm unsure if these 2 spywares are overkill and maybe wasting my $ on 2 products that do the same function. i am totally not sure if these 2 products are redundant or should i just get them both.

Yes you need an antivirus and antispyware. Norton Antivirus is not a spyware scanner. You can download a free antispware. I personally run an anti-virus and two antispyware programs. (Spy Sweeper and Spyware Doctor)
Free AntiSpyware
- Spyware Doctor Starter Edition (The Best)
- SuperAntispyware (2nd Best)
- Adaware 2007 (most popular)
- Microsoft Defender
- AVG AntiSpyware
- Spyware Terminator 2
- Spybot Search and Destroy

norton is virus, webroot is spyware , 2 totally different animals.
i would get webroot with spyware antivirus together, but since u paid for norton , download spybot for free if u dont want to pay for webroot

They play two different function , Norton is an antivirus , webroot cleans from spyware ( third party programs installed in your computer)
There are many free antispyware programs in the market, the difference, is that you need to scan the computer yourself

The truth is simply - yes it is pc suicide to operate a computer anymore without real time protection paid subscription antivirus, antispyware, and a quality firewall.
Otherwise the pc IS infected and you are not aware of it. Running "barefoot" (without these security softwares installed) doesn't last a hot month anymore. This is a major reason Vista cam out of the box with antispyware (Windows Defender) and a beefed up basic firewall installed and running with the complimentary Norton antivirus as well. They are trying to help the public everyway they can in security. It is very hard not to scare people and kill internet trade. This is why things are so slow in information from the commercial angle of things. I disagree. I think they should be right up front and have some simple instruction video when launching a new computer. Like one hour on pc security. I think everyone interested with computers would love the first "class"….. kind of expected. They never did.
