I was sitting at my computer (xp pro, norton antivirus corporate edition 2006 v10) and It popped up with a warning that said "static" it was in the same window that it shows if it just blocked a virus, but I can't seem to find out what it means. The only reason it concerns me is that it was while there was lightning outside, and now my laptop (which was on the same network) isnt connecting to the network anymore via wired connection, but it will wirelessly. Can Norton detect a static shock? I have both computers on power surge protecters, but not on the network cables. Anyone know?
I wasnt saying that norton determined it was lightning outside, but if somehow it determined that a surge hit my computer, it doesnt take high tech stuff to do that, I just didnt think norton was capable. It is a new top of the line computer, I just dont know that it can. None the less it said static, and I have no other explaination as to why. Also, I do use spybot S&D as well as Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor.

I'm not fond of Norton. Any time a virus can infect your actual antivirus program, well, that sort of defeats the purpose of having antivirus.
Keep in mind that everyone of these things is either free of charge or open source. That also means that the updates are free. Running the software with out the updates is the same as not running it at all. In addition to anti-virus software, you should also have anti-spyware software.
You should use more than one anti-spyware package because there is no one spyware package that will detect everything. Each one will pick up things that the others miss. Part of this is based on what gets submitted to the people who make the software which in turn is based on what the users encounter. There are so many that its hard to create a comprehensive list of everything out there that spies on you.
When you're done, be sure to go to Windows Update and apply ALL of the patches. Don't just run the "Express" updates. Run "Custom" and pick all of the software that's available to you. It make take several times before you no longer have patches. Once that's done, be sure to turn on your automatic updates. For Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525. For Vista - http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/updates/faq.mspx
Make sure that you're not running a cracked version of Windows or other software packages. Software doesn't get cracked for the benefit of humanity. It gets cracked because a hacker somewhere wants you run his software on your computer. That means he can use your computer to serve porn and send spam. Or capture your user names and passwords for identity theft.

it isnt possible for an antivirus to detect the lightening outside.
logical reason:
1)Any computer program what so ever will definitely need a sensor to do so.
2) A computer program words on the principle of getting input by using input devices then manipulating that data into a meaningful form and then displaying the result.
So, if u can find any input device anywhere near u which is telling the presence of lightening to ur norton then Bingo..
